Mashed Potatoes Challenge… real homemade potatoes vs. store-bought Idahoan Buttery Homestyle instant potatoes. To prepare the perfect Homemade Mashed Potatoes, it takes quite a bit of time and energy, but is it actually worth all that additional effort?
Prep Time 15 minutes minutes Cook Time 25 minutes minutes
Real Potatoes: 2 lb Russet Potatoes peeled ⅔ cup Milk 1 stick Butter at room temperature ½ tsp Sea Salt Instant Potatoes: 4 oz bag Idahoan Buttery Homestyle Instant Mashed Potatoes 1 cup Milk 1 cup Water plus 1-3 tablespoons if needed ½ stick Butter Salt to taste
Real Potatoes: Place peeled potatoes in large pot and fill with enough water to cover.
Bring to a boil and cook until soft (about 20-25 minutes).
Drain and put in bowl.
Heat milk in microwave 1 minute at a time at 50% power until hot.
Manually mash with whisk atttachment then slowly beginning at low turn on mixer until you reach medium.
Gradually add hot milk.
Add butter 1 tablespoon at a time, incorprating as you go.
Season with salt to taste.
Instant Potatoes: Add bag of potatoes to large bowl.
Add milk and water. Stir until blended and smooth.
Whip for several minutes with whisk attachments.
Microwave for 4 minutes.
Cut butter into pats and fold in one at a time until melted.
Whip with whisk until fluffy. If not looking creamy add additional water 1 tablespoon at a time.
Microwave 2 more minutes.
Season with salt to taste.
Whip until fluffy.
